To students today, the
‘Troubles’ in Northern
Ireland are now a part of
history, defined by
images of paramilitary
murals and the annual
Orange Order marches
that these days barely
receive any TV coverage
at all. Northern
Ireland is a beautiful
country now living at
peace with itself despite
a history of political
division that ended only
a short time ago with
the onset of the Good
Friday Agreement.
The tour we have outlined will take in the early years of the ‘Troubles’ in Derry and Belfast from the Civil Rights Marches in 1968 through to the tragedy of Bloody Sunday and its aftermath of Bloody Friday, that sent the Province into a spiral of violence that took nearly 30 years to resolve.
The aim of the tour will be to give students a balanced narrative of those times looking at the views of Republicans, Loyalists and the government at Westminster. The tour will be accompanied by an Anglia representative assisted by guides from local educational groups specialising in this area, from both sides of the community.
This is without a doubt our most bold and innovative tour to date and one that will give students an insight into those momentous events
