Anglia Battlefield Tours
Ltd is delighted to be
able to offer its ‘No
Mans Land Experience’
for schools on WWI
tours.
We are the only
company able to offer
schools this unique
hands on experience
and only because of the
military background of
most of our guides.
There is only so much
you can learn in a
classroom. This is an
opportunity for students
and staff to gain a real
feel for what life must
have been like for their Great Grandfathers actually in the trenches and at night!
The ‘Experience’ is divided into three parts as follows:
THE RAID
The NML experience gives our guides the opportunity to brief students and staff at night
on trench raiding, that most dreaded of activities on the Western Front. Two students will
be dressed up for such a raid and the group will be shown the weapons and equipment
they would be required to take with them.
DUTIES OF A SENTRY
Sentries would be on duty for around two hours at night in pairs, usually alternating every
hour. Students will be taught how to look at objects at night and also how to listen for
sounds in the darkness. They will learn about passwords, challenges and the importance
placed on sentries at night – so great that falling asleep on duty warranted the death
penalty. They will also learn about normal routine in the trenches at night when most
activities took place, from wiring parties going out to patrols trying to gain information.
THE NO MANS LAND EXPERIENCE
Students and staff will then enter a simulated trench system to the accompaniment of the
background noises of gun and shell fire, typical sounds that never stopped even for a
moment during the entire war.
Following a briefing and a chance to let their eyes get accustomed to the darkness they will listen to a series of noises in No Mans Land and have to make decisions as to what they are? Where they come from? What to do about them? Is it a friendly patrol coming back into your lines or the build up to an enemy raid?
YOU MUST DECIDE!
